What is a work permit in Canada?

A Canadian work permit is an official authorization issued by the Government of Canada that grants a foreign national the legal right to work within the country for a specified duration.

It is a document that outlines the terms and conditions under which a non-Canadian citizen can engage in employment activities, considering factors such as the type of work, employer, and location.

Work permits are generally job-specific and typically require a job offer from a Canadian employer before the application process. They regulate foreign labor in Canada and ensure that individuals meet requirements, including security and health checks, to contribute to the country’s workforce.

The process to get a Work Permit in Canada

1. Secure a Job Offer

Secure a valid job offer from a Canadian employer. This is a crucial first step, as most work permits in Canada are job-specific. Sometimes, your prospective employer may need to provide a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to demonstrate the need for foreign talent.

But why worry? CIS Desk is the only firm that assigns a dedicated Recruitment Specialist to find jobs that match your employment profile and secure the job offer on your behalf.

2. Determine Your Work Permit Eligibility

An immigration advisor at the CIS Desk will review the eligibility requirements for the work permit you are applying for. They will ensure you meet all necessary criteria, including qualifications and job-specific prerequisites.

3. Prepare Required Documents

You must gather all necessary documents for your work permit application. This typically includes your job offer letter, a valid passport, and any supporting documents specific to your situation.

4. Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) Application (if applicable)

Depending on your home country, you may need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) alongside your work permit. An RCIC Agent at the CIS Desk firm will be assigned to submit your profile and issue the TVR on your behalf.

5. Complete Application Forms

The CIS Desk firm will assign an immigration advisor to fill out the appropriate work permit application forms provided by the Canadian government to ensure that all sections are completed accurately and honestly.

6. Submit Your Application

An RCIC agent at the CIS Desk firm will submit your application to the relevant immigration authority online or through a Visa Application Center (VAC). Pay the required processing fees at this stage.

7. Interviews and Background Checks

Be prepared for interviews, background checks, and any necessary security or medical assessments during the review process. The government may request additional information during this stage. This is why a case manager at CIS Desk will prepare you and assist you in passing this process.

8. Wait for Approval

Wait for the government to process your application, which may take several weeks. Be patient during this period. An RCIC agent at the CIS Desk will monitor the status of your application through the online system if available and will update you when the approval has been issued.

9. Receive Your Work Permit

Once your application is approved, you will receive your work permit. Review the terms and conditions carefully, such as the duration of the permit, authorized employer, and any specific job-related requirements.
